Women's basketball tops TLU and clinches ASC Tournament berth

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team took control of the game with an 18-0 first-half run and the Cru never looked back in an 81-65 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 16-9 overall and 13-8 in American Southwest Conference play. The Cru women also clinch a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament for the sixth straight season with the win. Texas Lutheran finishes the season with an 8-17 overall record and a 7-14 mark in ASC play.
 
Texas Lutheran jumped out to a 22-19 lead midway through the first half before the Cru erupted. UMHB went on an 18-0 run, keyed by three consecutive three-pointers from Cortney Poncik to open up a 37-22 lead. The Cru would take a 46-30 lead into halftime. UMHB then dominated the early part of the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 25 points. Texas Lutheran would not get closer than the final margin of 16 points the rest of the way.
 
Landie Thompson led UMHB with 15 points and she added five assist. Lindsay Eaton had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Cru and Poncik finished with nine points. Ten different players scored for the Cru in the victory.
 
Tamisha Timpson led all scorers with 22 points for Texas Lutheran and Lynn Lumpkin-Boozer added 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Kim Hagan also reached double figures with 10 points, all of them in the first half.
 
The Cru shot 67 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 55 percent for the game. UMHB also hit 8-13 from three-point range while holding TLU to 37 percent shooting from the floor.
 
UMHB will now advance to next week's ASC Championship Tournament in Brownwood. The Cru is the #4 seed from the ASC West Division and will face defending conference champion Louisiana College in a 12:00 PM tip-off next Friday. Howard Payne University is hosting the tournament and the ASC Champion will claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
