Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used timely hitting and a pair of solid pitching performances to post a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru took game one 3-0 and won game two 3-1 to complete a four-game weekend sweep of the Yellow Jackets. UMHB improves to 11-7 overall and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the two victories. Howard Payne falls to 2-16 overall and 0-4 in the ASC with the two losses.
The Cru used the hitting of
Hannah White and the pitching of
Erica White to roll to a 3-0 win in game one.
Hannah White blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to account for all of UMHB's scoring. That would be more than enough offense for
Erica White. She took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh before Katie Poerner broke it up with a leadoff, infield single. The Cru promptly turned a double play and White coaxed another groundout for the final out to close out a complete-game, one-hitter. She struck out three and walked one to raise her record to 5-0.
Hannah White was 2-3 with three runs batted in for the Cru.
The Cru would grab a fourth-inning lead and make it stand-up in a 3-1 game two victory.
Kaysie Creech opened the scoring for the Cru when she tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth.
Austin McCormick would add an RBI single in that inning. HPU cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but
Chandler Henson's RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth provided an insurance run and
Erica White set the Yellow Jackets down in order in the top of the seventh for her first save of the season. Creech had two of UMHB's seven hits and she scored two of the Cru's three runs.
Ariel Kemmerer went four and third innings of two-hit pitching to even her record at 2-2 for UMHB.
The Cru will now have a week off from American Southwest Conference West Division play. UMHB will travel to Pineville, Louisiana for a non-conference doubleheader at Louisiana College next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
