Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used two completely different methods, but the results were the same as the Cru rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Hardin-Simmons University Friday in Belton. UMHB won game one 2-1 and then cruised to an 18-1 victory in game two. The Cru improves to 24-10 overall and 17-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory and UMHB stretches its lead in the ASC West Division to four games. The Cowgirls fall to 19-15 overall and 13-5 in the ASC on the season with the two losses.

The Cru broke up a scoreless pitcher's duel with a two-run fourth inning and then held on for a 2-1 game one victory. UMHB's Erica White and HSU's Megann Lewis were locked up in a scoreless game entering the bottom of the fourth. Austin McCormick's two-out, two-run single plated the first run of the game and Caitlin Wells added an RBI single to give the Cru a 2-0 lead. HSU tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when Blair Wallace scored on a throwing error. The Cowgirls would have a chance to tie the game when Mackenzie Clay tried to score on Kelsey Cogdell's slow roller. UMHB third baseman Caitlin Bollier fielded the ball and flipped it with her glove to Cru catcher Chandler Henson. Henson was blocking the plate and Clay collided with her and missed home plate. Bollier alertly picked up the ball and tagged Clay out while the base-runner and Cru catcher were both dazed for a moment. UMHB would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but could not push across any insurance. White then sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a groundout to nail down the victory. She raised her record to 13-1 on the season with a five-hitter. White struck out five and did not allow an earned run. Lewis took the loss for HSU to drop to 10-7 after giving up six hits and two runs in six innings. Megan Bohne had two of the Cru's six hits. Five different players had base hits for the Cowgirls.

UMHB erupted for a nine-run first inning and never looked back on the way to an 18-1 win in game two. After a pair of singles to lead off the bottom of the first, Bollier dropped a bunt for the Cru. Hardin-Simmons would commit three errors on the play, allowing all three runners to score. Brittany Moreno, Henson, McCormick, Wells, Kaysie Creech and Bollier all added RBI's in the frame. The Cru would put nine more on the board in the bottom of the second. Bohne led off the inning with a solo home run and Bollier and Hannah White both drove in a pair of runs to push the lead to 18-0. HSU scored its only run in the top of the third inning. Ariel Kemmerer and Kirstie Curry combined on a one-hitter for the Cru and Kemmerer raised her record to 7-4 on the year after only allowing an unearned run on one hit in four innings. Sarah Shurbet took the loss for the Cowgirls to fall to 6-7 on the season after lasting just one-third of an inning. Creech was 3-4 for the Cru and Wells, Hannah White, Moreno and Henson added two hits apiece in a 16-hit offensive attack for UMHB.

The two teams will close out the series with another 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Dee Dillon Field. The Cru will then take on Concordia Texas in a four-game ASC West Division series next Thursday and Friday to close out the regular season.
