Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team took the lead early in both games and never looked back as the Cru rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB won game one 12-4 and took game two 10-0 with both games ending early in the run rule. The Cru improves to 19-9 overall and 12-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two victories. UMHB also maintains its one-game lead over Hardin-Simmons University in the West with the sweep. The losses drop the Lobos to 1-27 overall and 0-16 in the ASC West on the season.
UMHB took an early lead and held off a Sul Ross rally for a 12-4 victory in game one. The Cru grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on
Caitlin Bollier's sacrifice fly and
Hannah White's RBI double.
Chandler Henson scored on an error in the bottom of the second to make it 3-0 and
Ashton Feight's RBI groundout in the fourth gave the Cru a 4-0 lead. The Lobos cut it to 4-1 in the top of the fourth before UMHB added three more in the bottom of the frame.
Caitlin Wells singled home the first run and White added a two-run single. Sul Ross put three on the board in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-4, but UMHB ended the game with five runs over the next two innings.
Austin McCormick scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-4. The Cru then pushed four across in the bottom of the sixth. Feight singled home the first run, two more runs scored on an error and Wells singled home the game-ending run. Wells finished with three hits for UMHB and White, Henson and
Kaysie Creech added two hits apiece.
Erica White scattered five hits and four runs over six innings to raise her record to 9-1 on the year. She struck out 10 and walked three.
The Cru took control of game two with a four-run first inning and cruised to a 10-0 victory. Bollier doubled home the first two runs,
Megan Bohne followed with an RBI single and
Laura Sotiropoulos added an RBI double to make it 4-0. Creech had an RBI single in the bottom of the second and Bollier added a solo home run to push the lead to 6-0. UMHB would then add four more in the bottom of the fourth.
Hannah White walked with the bases loaded, Bohne followed with a two-run single and Feight drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Ariel Kemmerer earned the win to move to 6-3 for the Cru with four innings of two-hit pitching. Creech, Bollier and Sotiropoulos all had three hits apiece for UMHB and Wells and Bohne added two hits apiece in a 15-hit Cru attack.
UMHB will return to action with a four-game ASC West Division series at Texas Lutheran University next weekend in Seguin. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM doubleheader on Friday before closing out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
