Round Rock, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used a dominating pitching performance and timely hitting to win game one, but the Cru could not generate enough offense to take game two in a doubleheader split with Concordia Texas Thursday night in Round Rock. UMHB posted a 3-0 victory in game one before falling 2-0 in game two.

The Cru used another dominating pitching performance from Erica White and some timely hitting to post a 3-0 victory in game one. White took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before allowing a leadoff double to Jessica Rattan. That would be Concordia's only hit of the game. UMHB scored the only run it needed when Jordan Giesen's RBI fielder's choice scored Caitlin Bollier in the top of the fourth inning. The Cru added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Caitlin Wells hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the inning and Austin McCormick stole third base and scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0. White then set the Tornados down in order in the bottom of the seventh to raise her record to 16-1 on the season. She struck out six and walked three while posting her eighth shutout of the year. Kat Moreno scattered four hits for Concordia but fell to 9-9 on the season after giving up three runs, two of them earned. Four different players had the hits for UMHB in the victory.

UMHB could not break through against Concordia pitcher Teylor Schiefelbein in a 2-0 game two loss. The Tornados grabbed a 1-0 lead on Rattan's RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning and stretched it to 2-0 on Jordan Berry's RBI single in the bottom of the third. The Cru would have a base-runner thrown out at home in the top of the third and left runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, but could not push across a run. Schiefelbein improves to 12-6 after holding UMHB to just three hits in a complete-game shutout. Ariel Kemmerer (7-5) took the loss for the Cru after giving up eight hits and two runs in five innings of work. Wells had two of UMHB's three hits in the loss.

The Cru moves to 27-11 overall and 20-2 in American Southwest Conference West Division play following the split. Concordia moves to 23-15 overall and 14-8 in the ASC West and the Tornados also clinched a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament with the game two victory. Concordia is coached by UMHB softball alum and former Cru assistant coach Denise Lira.

The two teams will close out the series and the 2011 regular season with a 1:00 PM doubleheader at Dee Dillon Field in Belton tomorrow. UMHB will also host “Strike Out Breast Cancer” activities during the doubleheader. The Cru has also clinched the ASC West Division title and earned the #1 seed from the West in next weekend's ASC Championship Tournament in Lewisville.
