Volleyball beats U.T.-Dallas 3-1

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team grabbed the lead early and then held on as the Cru posted a four-set victory over the University of Texas at Dallas Tuesday night in Belton. UMHB's 26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 25-13 win moves the Cru's season record to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference play. The loss drops the Comets to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the ASC East Division.
 
The Cru won see-saw battles in the first two sets, almost letting the first set slip away after leading 24-22. UTD then dominated the third set before the Cru stormed back to win the fourth set. Kaydie Cochran served the final five points after the Comets had pulled to within 20-13. The win is the first by an ASC East Division opponent against UTD since 2008 and the loss snaps the Comets 26-match East Division winning streak.
 
Sara Hayward led the Cru with 11 kills and Kimberly Smidovec added 10 kills while hitting .409. Anissa Garcia led the way with 39 assists and Jasmine Austin led four players in double figures in digs with 18. Garcia had 14 digs, Morgan Baker chipped with 13 and Elise Butler recorded 12 digs.
 
Hillary Baugh topped the Comets with 16 kills, Halea Williams added 15 and Dana Hilzendager also reached double figures with 13. Hayden Higgins posted 40 assists and Amy Gunter led all players with 32 digs. Baugh also had 19 digs in the match for UTD.
 
The Cru will continue its home stand with a 7:00 PM match against Centenary College on Friday night. UMHB will then hit the road to take on East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau University the following weekend.
