Volleyball splits matches at TLU tri-match

Seguin, TX – Tonight's University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team won the first two hard-fought sets, dropped the third before bouncing back to take the fourth as the Cru posted a four-set win over Texas Wesleyan Friday afternoon in Seguin. UMHB opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Texas Lutheran as part of a tri-match hosted by the Bulldogs. The Cru opens the season with a 1-1 record.
 
UMHB worked overtime to win the first two sets and then held on for a gutsy 26-24, 29-27, 22-25, 25-18 win over Texas Wesleyan. The Cru fought back from a 6-2 deficit in the opening set and then held off three set points in the second set victory. The Cru jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set and then held off a late TWU rally to post the win. Freshman Sophia Alexiou led UMHB with 17 kills and Morgan Baker added 14. Kimberly Smidovec and Kaydie Cochran also reached double figures with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Anissa Garcia posted 52 assists for the Cru and Elise Butler had a team-high 17 digs to lead three players in double figures. The win also gives UMHB head coach Rob Frost his first win with the Cru.
 
UMHB kept it close the whole way in the opener but fell to Texas Lutheran 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 in the season opener for both teams. Smidovec had a team-best 10 kills for the Cru and Baker added seven more. Garcia led UMHB with 27 assists and Jasmine Austin led the way with 10 digs.
 
The Cru will now return home to return to action with the home and American Southwest Conference East Division opener. UMHB will welcome the University of Texas at Tyler to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 7:00 PM start on Tuesday, September 6th
