Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team exploded for a six-run second inning and then held on to win game two and salvage a doubleheader split with East Texas Baptist University Thursday evening in Belton. UMHB won game two 10-7 after falling 4-0 in game one. The Cru is now 2-3 on the season while ETBU starts the year at 1-1. The second game was the first on-campus home night game in the history of the UMHB softball program.
The Cru fell behind early in game two before storming back and holding off the Tigers late rally in a 10-7 game two victory. ETBU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. UMHB chipped away with a run in the bottom of that frame before erupting for a six-run second to take the lead for good. There were two bases loaded walks in the inning and the Cru had a two-run single from
Ashton Feight and RBI singles from
Caitlin Bollier and
Kaysie Creech.
Jordan Giesen's RBI single pushed the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth and
Camryn Bintz blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Cru a 10-4 edge. ETBU rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but
Rebekah Ragsdale pitched out of a jam with the tying run at the plate to end the threat.
Hannah White earned the victory for the Cru with five and two-thirds innings of hitless relief. White also had three hits. Ashton Brey took the loss for the Tigers. Kayla Garcia had two of ETBU's seven hits.
Game one was a scoreless duel into the top of the seventh until ETBU put a four-spot on the board and posted a 4-0 win. The Cru put a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings but could not push across a run. ETBU loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh and Allison Burton ripped a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Brey doubled home Burton for an insurance run and UMHB could not answer in the bottom of the inning. Ragsdale took the loss after scattering seven hits in seven innings. White had two of the Cru's four hits. Kaylee Davis went the distance for ETBU, throwing a four-hit shutout. Brey had two of the Tigers seven hits in the game.
The Cru will return to action with a 12:00 PM home doubleheader against Louisiana College on Saturday. UMHB will play in the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament in Irving next weekend.
