Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team grabbed an early lead and never let go in both games as the Cru rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University Friday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB won game one 8-3 and took game two 7-3 to improve to 10-7 overall and 6-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. Howard Payne falls to 6-12 overall and 1-5 in the ASC West on the season with the two losses.

UMHB took game one 8-3 after jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. Hannah White's two-run single put the Cru up 2-0 in the top of the first and Chandler Henson added an RBI single in the top of the second to stretch the lead to 3-0. UMHB put for runs on the board in the fourth on Kaysie Creech's RBI groundout, RBI singles from Henson and Leanne Hinojosa and Caitlin Bollier's sacrifice fly. Camryn Bintz added a run-scoring single in the fifth to make it 8-0 Cru before Howard Payne added three late runs to close the gap. Henson was 3-3 for UMHB and Bintz and Janie Neyland added two hits apiece. Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win for the Cru to move to 5-3 after giving up seven hits and three runs in five and a third innings. She struck out six and walked one.

UMHB also grabbed a 3-0 lead early in game two on the way to a 7-3 victory. Bollier singled home a run and scored on White's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Cru in the top of the first. Bintz added an RBI single in the top of the second to push it to 3-0 UMHB. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of three Cru errors to tie the game at three in the bottom of the third inning. Howard Payne had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Hinojosa gunned down pinch-runner Elizabeth Alvarado at the plate to end the inning. Bollier would come around to score on an error and Creech added an RBI fielder's choice to give UMHB a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth. Bintz added a two-run double in the top of the seventh to take the lead to 7-3 and provide some breathing room. That was more than enough offense for Ariel Kemmerer as she improved to 3-1 with a complete-game, seven-hitter. Kemmerer did not allow an earned run while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Bollier finished with three hits for the Cru and Neyland and Bintz added two hits apiece in the victory.

The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Brownwood. UMHB will then return home to host Texas Lutheran University for a four-game series next weekend at Dee Dillon Field.
