Game Two Box Score
Kerrville, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used different methods in the two games, but came up with positive results both times as the Cru swept a doubleheader from Schreiner University Friday night in Kerrville. UMHB won game one 3-0 and took game two 14-9 to complete the sweep. The Cru improves to 23-12 overall and 19-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victories. The sweep, coupled with Concordia's sweep of Hardin-Simmons also clinches the ASC West Division title for UMHB. The Mountaineers fall to 11-21 overall and 6-12 in the ASC on the year with the two losses.
The Cru took game one 3-0 behind
Rebekah Ragsdale's dominant pitching and some timely hitting late in the game. UMHB grabbed a 2-0 lead on Tori Gomez's RBI single and
Kaysie Creech's RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.
Jordan Giesen's RBI single in the top of the sixth inning provided an insurance run and that was more than enough support for Ragsdale. She tossed a three-hitter to raise her record to 12-5, striking out three and not walking a hitter in a shutout performance. Giesen led the UMHB offense with three hits and
Ashton Feight and
Janie Neyland added two hits apiece.
The Cru offense made the difference in a 14-9 game two win. Feight's two-run single gave UMHB a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Schreiner answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second for a 7-2 lead. The Cru tied the game with a five-run third, as Neyland and
Caitlin Wells both hit two-run singles. UMHB added five more in the fifth to erase an 8-7 deficit. Feight had a two-run single, Creech and
Camryn Bintz singled in runs and the fifth scored on an error. Bintz and
Kirstie Curry both drove in runs in a two-run sixth inning as the Cru stretched the lead. Curry also picked up her first win of the season, scattering four hits over five and two-thirds innings of relief work. Feight and Creech had three hits apiece and Feight drove in five runs to lead a 16-hit attack.
The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Kerrville. UMHB will then close out the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Houston-Victoria next Saturday. The Cru clinched a second straight ASC West title and earns a first-round bye in the ASC Championship Tournament in the process.
