Volleyball drops two conference matches

Abilene, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team dropped a pair of key American Southwest Conference matches Friday in Abilene. The Cru opened the day with a five-set loss to U.T.-Dallas before dropping a four-set decision to Hardin-Simmons. UMHB is now 21-5 overall and 10-3 in conference play on the season following the two losses.

The Cru fell to the Comets 25-18, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-8 in the opening match. UMHB dropped the first set to U.T.-Dallas but bounced back to win the next two. The Cru battled back from an early deficit to tie the fourth set at 21, but UTD won the final four points to stay alive. UMHB then opened the fifth set with four straight points before the Comets answered with an 8-0 run. The Cru would get as close as 12-8 before UTD won the final three points to close it out.

Cheyenne Dowdey, Lauren Powell and Katrina Kastmo led UMHB with 10 kills apiece. Kendall Pye added 26 assists and Shelby Prather chipped in 15 more. Pye also led five players in double figures with 18 digs for the Cru.

UMHB then closed out the day with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20 loss to Hardin-Simmons University. The Cru fought back from an opening set loss for a second set victory but had late comebacks fall short in the third and fourth sets.

Powell topped UMHB with 16 kills and Bianca Patterson added eight more. Pye had 20 assists and Prather posted 13. Kendra Feldmann had a team-high 16 digs and Powell posted 13 for a double-double on the night.

The Cru will close out this weekend's action with a 2:00 PM match against Howard Payne University on Saturday. UMHB will then return home for the final home matches of the regular season next weekend at the Mayborn Campus Center.
