Football to open conference play at Sul Ross State

Game Notes

Alpine, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team should be well-rested for the start of American Southwest Conference play as the Cru travels to Sul Ross State this weekend. UMHB is coming off just the fourth scheduled bye week in program history and opens conference play with a 1:00 PM kickoff against the Lobos Saturday at Jackson Field.

The Cru hasn't played since putting together its most complete performance in a 73-7 victory over Kean University two weeks ago in Belton. UMHB is 4-0 on the season and ranked second in the country in both major national polls. The Lobos are 1-4 on the year after falling to Oklahoma Panhandle State University 56-0 last week. Sul Ross is under the direction of first-year head coach John Pearce and he is the program's third head coach in the last three seasons. UMHB also leads the all-time series between the two teams 16-0. But the Cru was challenged by the Lobos in a 40-18 UMHB victory in last season's meeting and Sul Ross certainly has the Cru's attention this year.

"Our guys are really eager to play and the open week allowed us to really push our guys to grow and develop," Cru Head Coach Pete Fredenburg said. "You watch video on Sul Ross and it doesn't take long to realize that they are well-coached and have a lot of talent all over the field. I think our kids will really respond to the challenge that Sul Ross will present this weekend."

The Cru has won all eight of the previous meetings between the two teams in Alpine. UMHB has also won 32 consecutive American Southwest Conference games, 48 straight regular season games and 23 regular season road games in a row going into Saturday's game. The game will also be the first day game of the season for the Cru after UMHB opened the year with four straight 6:00 PM kickoffs.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on K101.7 FM in Central Texas with the pre-game starting at 12:30 PM. UMHB will also provide live video streaming and Sul Ross State will offer live statistics for the contest. You can find links to all of the game coverage, including K101.7's live audio stream, through the UMHB Athletic Department web site at www.cruathletics.com.
