Softball drops season opener to Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team opened the 2014 season at Mississippi College today, dropping two contests to the Choctaws. The Cru opens their season at 0-2 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the Choctaws open at 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
 
The first game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Chandler Henson hit a double off MC's Lacie Patterson. Leanne Hinojosa came into the contest as a pinch runner for Henson and scored off an RBI single from Myranda Hinojosa.  UMHB put up two more runs in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Dayton Kunz and a sacrifice fly from Henson. Mississippi College added two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Lauren Mulligan hit a two RBI single to third base to give the Choctaws the 4-3 victory. Both team recorded ten hits and no errors in the contest. Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss in the circle.
 
The Choctaws grabbed an early lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. UMHB responded with a strong sixth inning but was unable to catch Mississippi College. Leah Brown hit an RBI single, scoring Myranda Hinojosa before Halle Sabo hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Janie Neyland, cutting the Choctaws game-winning lead to 3-2. The Cru totaled three hits in the contest, led by Leah Brown's two. Mississippi College had eight hits, with Karla Beth Hux recording a team-high two RBI. Neither team recorded an error in the contest. Halle Sabo took the loss for the Cru, striking out three batters.
 
The Cru will return to action tomorrow in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Mississippi College. UMHB opens the home season with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday, February 18th at Dee Dillon Field.
