Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team defeated Hardin-Simmons 94-80 Thursday evening in Belton for the team's 16
th win this season. UMHB improves to 16-8 on the season and 16-5 in conference play while the Cowgirls fall to 8-16 overall and 8-13 in American Southwest Conference action.
Both teams opened the game trading baskets before UMHB used a 5-0 run to grab a 19-11 lead on the Cowgirls with 12 minutes left. Hardin-Simmons tied the game with just under nine minutes remaining and held a close score before UMHB propelled a 10-6 run to gain a 37-33 halftime advantage. UMHB opened the second half with an 11-5 run and did not trail again, leading by as many as 16 points.
Macy Moore led four Crusaders in double digits with 21 points, followed by
Alyssa Dean's 19,
Jovana Miles' 17 and
Jonelle Smith's 13. Miles was the leading rebounder for the Cru with 14 while
Bridjai Chaney added 12. Moore and
Destini Oakmon each recorded six assists while Moore added three steals. The Cru out-rebounded the Cowgirls 51-36 in the match and shot 47 percent in the contest. The Cru totaled 18 assists and 11 steals, forcing 23 turnovers.
Joanna Daniel was the Cowgirls' leading scorer with 22 points followed by Becca Chagnon with 12 and Kayla Brown with 11. Daniel and Shelby Hanna both recorded a team-high six rebounds while Chagnon added four steals. The Cowgirls shot 44 percent in the contest and 37 percent from beyond the arc. Hardin-Simmons totaled 19 assists and 13 steals.
UMHB will close out the regular season Saturday in a 1 p.m. match against The University of Texas at Dallas in Belton. The Cru will then travel to the University of Texas at Tyler to compete in the 2014 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, February 28th-March 2nd in Tyler. The winner of Saturday's matchup between the Cru and the Comets will determine the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
