Women’s basketball outlasts East Texas Baptist 94-80

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball defeated East Texas Baptist University 94-80 Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improved to 14-7 on the season and 14-4 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Tigers fell to 8-12 overall and 6-11 in conference play.  

ETBU led the game until the 16:10 mark, when UMHB grabbed a one-point advantage. The score tied five times in the first half before UMHB used a 10-3 run to close the half with a seven-point lead. The Tigers responded in the second half with an 11-3 run to gain a lead and the game remained close until just under seven minutes when UMHB used a 14-5 run for a seven-point advantage. UMHB held that lead for the remainder of the game and did not allow a basket in the final two minutes of play.

Macy Moore led the Cru with 27 points, followed by Jonelle Smith's 24, Jovana Miles' 19 and Alyssa Dean's 13. Miles was also the leading rebounder for UMHB with 12. The Cru totaled 19 assists and forced 18 turnovers in the contest. UMHB shot 46 percent in the contest and 53 percent from beyond the arc. Smith's six three-pointers ranks second in UMHB's Division III record book for three-point field goals made in a contest.

Amanda Rucker was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 22 points, followed by April Leonard's 16, Kendall Festervand's 14 and Slim Stewart's 11. Rucker was also the leading rebounder for the Tigers with 10. UMHB outrebounded the Tigers 48-34 in the contest. ETBU totaled 14 assists and nine steals in the contest. The Tigers shot 45 percent in the game and 75 percent from the free throw line.
 
UMHB will return to action Thursday, Feb. 13th in a 5:30 p.m. match at the University of the Ozarks. The Cru will face the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday, Feb. 15th at 1 p.m. before returning home to close out the regular season Thursday, Feb. 20th and Saturday, Feb. 22nd
