Alpine, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Sul Ross State University 13-0, 8-0 Thursday evening in Alpine. The Cru improved to 24-12 on the season and 19-10 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 4-30 overall and 4-26 in conference play.
The Cru used a UMHB Division III-era record four home runs to power a 13-0 win over the Lobos in the series' first game.
Myranda Hinojosa homered to centerfield for a 1-0 lead, followed by a two-RBI homerun from
Victoria Gomez to give the Cru a 3-0 lead after the first. Gomez and
Dayton Kunz both drove in runs in the top of the fourth for a five-run lead before Kunz hit the Cru's third homerun of the day to centerfield for a 7-0 lead.
Emily Marrs next drove in two runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-0 lead.
Corina Drake hit the Cru's final homerun of the game, smashing a grand slam to left field for the 13-0 victory. Drake led the Cru with four RBI, while Gomez and Kunz each recorded three. Gomez also recorded a team-high four hits while
Leah Brown led the Cru with three runs. UMHB totaled 18 hits and no errors while the Lobos had six hits and three errors.
Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win in the circle for the Cru, striking out five batters for her 14
th win of the season.
Brown opened the second game with an RBI double, scoring
Myranda Hinojosa. Gomez followed that with a two-RBI double, scoring
Janie Neyland and Brown for another 3-0 lead for the Cru. Kunz and
Kelsey Vann each drove in a run and scored, giving the Cru a six-run lead after the first. Gomez used a single to drive in
Janie Neyland in the top of the second for a 7-0 lead. The Cru held that advantage until
Leah Brown hit UMHB's fifth homerun of the day in the top of the sixth to secure the Cru's 8-0 victory.
Janie Neyland led the Cru with four hits while Gomez and Vann added three. Neyland and Brown led the team with two runs scored while Gomez had a game-high three RBI.
Haley Parker earned the win in the circle for the Cru, striking out four batters. The Cru totaled eight runs on 15 hits with two errors while the Lobos had four hits and two errors.
The Cru returns to action tomorrow in an 11 a.m. single game against the Lobos in Alpine.
