Women’s Basketball opens ASC play with 72-57 win over Belhaven


JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned its third consecutive win with a 72-57 win at Belhaven University Thursday evening in Jackson. The win improves the Cru to 3-3 on the season while the Blazers fell to 0-3.
 
UMHB opened the game at a 4-0 deficit before using a 12-0 run to gain an eight-point advantage on the Blazers. The Cru held a significant lead through the first quarter but the Blazers used a 7-0 run to tie the contest at 24-24 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter. The teams continued to battle closely, but UMHB used a pair of three-pointers and an 8-0 run to grab a double-digit lead on the Blazers.
 
Tori Tucker led UMHB with a career-high 21 points, followed by Jonelle Smith with 16 points and Meghan Turner with 10. Tucker led the Cru with nine field goals while Smith went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Destini Oakmon led UMHB with six assists, followed by Turner with five. Kendra Wynn led UMHB's defense with nine rebounds, followed by Smith and Bridjai Chaney with five. UMHB out-rebounded the Blazers 45-37 in the match, forcing Belhaven into 22 turnovers. The Blazers were led by Candler Gregory with 14 points and Jasmine Brown and Vamikka Smith with seven rebounds. UMHB shot 44.4 percent in the contest, 53.3 percent from beyond the arc and 40 percent from the free throw line.
 
UMHB returns to action Saturday, December 5th in a 5:30 p.m. against Texas A&M International University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
