Pineville, Louisiana – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not overcome cold second-half shooting as the Cru fell to Louisiana College 76-68 Saturday afternoon in Pineville, Louisiana. UMHB drops to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The Wildcats improve to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the ASC with the victory.
The Cru scored the game's first four points and led 15-14 after the first quarter. UMHB opened the second quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to open up a seven-point advantage. The lead would grow to as many as 11 before the Cru settled for a 37-29 edge at halftime. The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a 19-4 run to take a 48-41 lead midway through the period. UMHB battled back to tie the game at 52 and trailed 53-52 at the end of three quarters. The Cru retook the lead and was up 63-57 with 6:37 remaining in the game, but would score just two more baskets the rest of the way as LC hit several clutch free-throws down the stretch to pull away for the victory.
Jonelle Smith led UMHB with 15 points and Bridjai Chaney and Kendra Wynn both posted double-doubles. Chaney had 13 points and 11 rebounds while Wynn added 14 points and grabbed 10 boards. Kourtney Bevers also reached double figures with 12 points. The Cru shot just 28 per cent in the second half and hit just 2-12 from three-point range in the final two quarters. UMHB committed 32 turnovers but did out rebound the Wildcats 48-40.
Kourtney McGhee topped five players in double figures for Louisiana College with 17 points. RyDeja McQuarn had 12 points with 10 of those coming from the free-throw line. Taylor Payne, Kortney Kling and Brooke Jones all scored 10 points apiece and Jones grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. LC was 30-39 from the free-throw line compared to UMHB's 17-24. The Wildcats shot 41 per cent from the field as a team to help overcome 27 turnovers in the contest.
The UMHB women will now return home to host a pair on conference games next week. The Cru will host LeTourneau University for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday before taking on U.T.-Tyler in a 1:00 PM start next Saturday.
