GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team beat Southwestern 76-66 Saturday evening in Georgetown. The win improved UMHB to 4-3 on the season while the Pirates fell to 3-4.
Southwestern opened the game with a 6-0 run before the Cru tied the first half up at 10 points each. The contest changed leads back and forth from there until UMHB used a 9-0 run led by
Ryan Lang with six points, holding a 31-22 lead at halftime. Lang opened the second half with two layups to give UMHB a nine-point cushion, followed by back-to-back layups from
Demarius Cress to put the Cru up 10 points. UMHB held a from the 3:30 mark in the second half through regulation to secure the 76-66 victory.
Lang led UMHB with 18 points followed by Cress with 17 and
Daniel Mills with 16. UMHB shot 51.7 percent in the contest, 29.4 percent from beyond the arc and 73.3 percent from the free throw line.
Aubrie King and Cress led the Cru with three assists each. Defensively,
Austen Stolte brought down a game-high 18 boards followed by Lang with four. Cress recorded a game-high five steals as UMHB forced the Pirates into 16 turnovers.
Zach Whitlock led Southwestern with 16 points followed by Ryan Ogden and Ben Stiver with 12 points each. Southwestern shot 35.9 percent in the contest, 30.6 percent from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent from the free throw line. The Pirates brought down 36 rebounds, added 16 assists and three steals.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 17
th in a 3 p.m. game against Louisiana College at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
