BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team edged Southwestern University 1-0 Saturday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 2-0 on the season while the Pirates fell to 1-1.
The teams combined for 12 total shots in the first half, but neither was able to find the back of the net sending the game into halftime scoreless.
Case Carnes finally broke the tie for UMHB in the 81
st minute, finding the bottom, left corner of the net off an assist from
Caleb Almanza. UMHB held on in the final nine minutes of play to take the 1-0 win.
Carnes led the Cru with four shots followed by
Caleb Latson with two. UMHB outshot the Pirates 16-14 in the match, putting nine shots on goal.
Javier Zaragoza earned the win for the Cru, playing all 90 minutes with no goals allowed and 10 saves. Ryan Benner took the loss for Southwestern, making eight saves with one goal allowed.
UMHB gets back to action on Monday, September 5
th in a 6 p.m. match against Trinity University at the Cru Sports Plex in Belton.
