Softball splits doubleheader with LeTourneau

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a doubleheader with LeTourneau University Friday in Longview, beating the YellowJackets 7-1 in the first contest and falling 4-3 in the second. UMHB improved to 3-1 on the season and opened American Southwest Conference play at 1-1 while the Yellow Jackets also moved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference action.
 
In the first game, Leah Brown helped UMHB to a lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Makenzi Dawson for a 1-0 advantage. LeTourneau scored the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth off a run from Hayley Hurley. Brown helped the Cru gain another lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RBI single to right center, scoring Devon Walter and Bailey Bohlken. UMHB then put the YellowJackets away with a four-run bottom of the sixth inning. Dawson opened the inning reaching on an error, scoring Avery Kelly and Kasi Cummings. Walter followed that with a triple to left center field, scoring Dawson and Bohlken to give the Cru a 7-1 victory. Walter led the Cru with four hits followed by Bohlken with two. Brown led the Cru with three RBI while Dawson and Walter each added two. Dawson also recorded a team-high two runs. Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching a complete game with eight hits and four strikeouts. UMHB had seven runs on 11 hits with two errors while the YellowJackets had one run on eight hits with three errors.
 
Courtney Matulis opened the second game with a scored run for the YellowJackets, reaching home off an RBI single from Ashlin Roach. Hayley Hurley scored next off an RBI single from Shelby Barrick before Roach ended the third with a 3-0 LeTourneau lead, scoring off an RBI bunt from Bailey Woodard. The YellowJackets held that lead until the top of the third when Leah Brown reached on an error and scored Christy Garrett to cut the lead to two. Kourtney Cummings then hit a double to left field, scoring Brown and Makenzi Dawson to tie the game at three runs each. Neither team was able to score again until the bottom of the seventh when Roach hit a walk-off home run to secure the 4-3 lead for LeTourneau. Bohlken led the Cru with two hits followed by four other Crusaders with one. Kourtney Cummings recorded a team-high two RBI while three Crusaders scored runs for UMHB. Haley Parker took the loss in the circle for the Cru, pitching a complete game with nine runs, four hits and four strikeouts. UMHB had three runs on six hits with three errors while the YellowJackets had four runs on nine hits with three errors.
 
The Cru returns to action tomorrow in a 12 p.m. doubleheader against the YellowJackets. UMHB then faces Trinity University on Tuesday, February 14th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader before opening the home slate with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Howard Payne on Friday, February 17th.
