SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader with Trinity University 4-2, 10-1 Tuesday evening in San Antonio. The sweep improved the Cru to 7-1 on the season while the Tigers opened their 2017 campaign at 0-2.
Christy Garrett was the first Crusader to score in the opening contest of the doubleheader, reaching home off a wild pitch in the top of the third. UMHB held a single-run lead until the seventh inning when the Cru added three insurance runs.

Kourtney Cummings for a 2-0 UMHB lead before
Leah Brown slammed a two-RBI double to score
Makenzi Dawson and
Devon Walter for a 4-0 advantage. Trinity added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, giving UMHB the 4-2 win. Drake led the Cru with two hits while Brown recorded a team-high two RBI.
Karen Tennis earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching a complete game with seven hits, two runs and six strikeouts. UMHB totaled four runs on seven hits while the Tigers had two runs on seven hits with two errors.
Trinity took a lead in the second contest when Rebecca Berreth hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Rylie Goldwait for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers held that lead until the top of the fifth inning when UMHB constructed a seven-run scoring offense.
Leah Brown and
Kourtney Cummings hit back-to-back RBI singles, scoring
Makenzi Dawson and
Devon Walter for a 2-1 UMHB lead. Drake and
Karley Free followed that with a pair of bases-loaded walks, allowing Brown and
Kourtney Cummings to score. Dawson drove in the last three runs with a triple to right field, scoring
Jordan Hughes, Free and Garrett for a 7-1 Cru advantage. UMHB then added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to go ahead by nine. Free hit a two-RBI double to score
Dusti Douglas and
Shelly Snyder before she scored herself off an error to put the Cru up 10-1. Brown led the Cru with four hits while Dawson added three. Dawson and Free each recorded a team-high three RBI with Free scoring a team-high two runs.
Haley Parker earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching six innings with four hits and one run.
CeCe Darilek finished the game for the Cru with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
The Cru returns to action in the 2017 home opener on Friday, February 17
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Howard Payne University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
