BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team handed Concordia Texas a 20-point loss Saturday afternoon in Belton, beating the Tornados 70-50. The win improved UMHB to 14-7 on the year and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
UMHB grabbed a lead early in the first quarter, going on a 7-2 run in the final 3:05 to end the quarter with a 15-12 lead.
Kendall Rollins led UMHB with seven points in the first ten minutes of action. The Cru extended the lead in the second, leading by eight points halfway through the quarter then limiting the Tornados to just two points in the final 3:57 to go into half time with a 31-23 advantage. UMHB led most of the third quarter before the Tornados tied it up with 1:07 left.
Jesslyn Poole then hit a three-point shot with 46 seconds left to elevate the Cru 44-41 after the third. UMHB finished out the fourth quarter with a 52.9 shooting percentage, outscoring the Tornados 26-9 for the 20-point win.
Kendall Rollins led the Cru with a new career-high 21 points while
Jonelle Smith added 14 and Poole had 11.
Meghan Turner led UMHB with seven assists in the contest while
Destini Oakmon added four. Defensively,
Kendra Wynn recorded a team-high 10 rebounds as the Cru out-rebounded the Tornados 41-35 in the contest.
Emily Cullers led Concordia Texas with 15 points followed by Brenisha Pane with 13 and Jaela Dejean with 10. Payne also recorded a team-high 10 rebounds. Concordia Texas shot 25.9 percent in the contest, 26.1 percent from beyond the arc and 64 percent from the free throw line. UMHB shot 46.7 percent in the contest, 41.7 percent from beyond the arc and 90 percent from the free throw line.
The Cru returns to action in a 5:30 p.m. match against Sul Ross State on Thursday, February 9
th at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
