BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell 12-11 to the University of Texas at Dallas as both teams combined for 13 runs in the final inning of play Sunday evening in Belton. The win improved the Comets to 17-3 on the season and 9-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cru fell to 10-8 overall and 5-8 in league play.
Jessica Vlasek gave the Comets a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she slammed an RBI double to right field, scoring Hope Griffith. UMHB responded in the bottom of the second inning when
Cori Drake and
Linsey Tomlinson hit back-to-back RBI doubles, scoring
Karley Free,
Kourtney Cummings and Drake for a 3-1 lead. UT Dallas tied the game in the top of the third inning, scoring off an RBI single from Jessica Vlasek.
Kourtney Cummings gave the Cru another lead in the bottom of the third, hitting an RBI single to score
Leah Brown from second base. Vlasek again put the Comets on top, slamming a three-RBI home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning to put a two-run advantage on the Cru. UT Dallas sealed the game with a six-run top of the seventh, taking a 12-4 lead on the Cru. UMHB constructed a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring seven runs off six hits.
Devon Walter opened scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Tomlinson before Brown hit an RBI single to third base, scoring
Makenzi Dawson. Brown and
Kourtney Cummings scored off a two-out error from UT Dallas before
Cori Drake slammed a two-RBI double to left centerfield, scoring
Kasi Cummings and
Myranda Hinojosa. Dawson followed that with an RBI double to score
Connor O'Neal. UT Dallas's Lauren McLeod earned the 12-11 win in the circle, allowing 11 hits on 11 runs with two strikeouts.
Karen Tennis,
Haley Parker and
CeCe Darilek all spent time in the circle for UMHB. Tennis took the start allowing four runs on two hits in two innings of work. Parker took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings with 10 hits and 10 runs allowed before
CeCe Darilek pitched the final two defensive outs for UMHB. Drake led the Cru with three hits and four RBI while Brown and
Kourtney Cummings both scored a team-leading two runs. Jessica Vlasek was the leader for the Comets, slamming six RBI on four hits. UMHB totaled 11 runs on 11 hits with three errors while UT Dallas had 12 runs on 14 hits with three errors.
The Cru continues the series with UT Dallas on Monday, March 13
th with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Dee Dillon Field in Belton. UMHB then travels to Concordia University Texas March 17
th – 18
th. That series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 17
th.
