Austin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team blew open a tight game in the late innings as the Cru rolled to an 11-2 victory over Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. UMHB completes the series sweep of the Tornados with the win and improves to 14-9 overall and 9-9 in American Southwest Conference play with its fourth straight victory. Concordia falls to 13-12 overall and 6-9 in the ASC with the loss.
The Tornados put a run on the board in the bottom of the third for an early 1-0 lead. UMHB answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kourtney Cummings singled home the first run, Devon Walter added an RBI on a ground ball and Leah Brown's two-run single made it 4-1 Cru. Concordia got a run back in the bottom of that inning before UMHB broke it open with seven runs in the top of the sixth. Karley Free singled home the first run, Kourtney Cummings doubled home the next run, Walter singled home a pair of runs, Bailey Bohlken's pinch-hit double plated two more runs and Myranda Hinojosa's sacrifice fly closed out the scoring. CeCe Darilek set down Concordia in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the run rule.
Karen Tennis scattered four hits over five innings of work to get the win and raise her record to 7-2 on the year. She struck out two and walked two. Kourtney Cummings had three hits for UMHB and Makenzi Dawson added two more. Walter drove in three runs and Brown, Bohlken and Kourtney Cummings all had two RBI. Shelby Burrus took the loss for Concordia after giving up seven hits and four runs in four and a third innings of work. Haley Dennett had two of the Tornados' six hits in the defeat.
UMHB will return to action with a 5:00 PM home doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday. The Cru will host University of the Ozarks for a three-game conference series this weekend.
