Softball falls to Belhaven University in extra innings

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fell 7-5 to Belhaven University in a 10-inning contest Saturday afternoon in Belton. The loss dropped UMHB to 26-14 on the season while the Blazers improved to 18-20.  
 
Cassidy Blount opened the game with an RBI single for the Blazers, then hit a two-RBI home run in the third inning to put Belhaven up by three runs. UMHB added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with RBI from Bailey Bohlken and Myranda Hinojosa. Belhaven added one more run in the top of the sixth before Karley Free slammed a two-RBI home run over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 4-4. The game remained tied until the top of the 10th inning when Belhaven powered three runs. Mary Austin Barber opened scoring with an RBI single to score Brooke Laigast before Hannah Holloway hit a two-RBI home run to put the Blazers up by three. UMHB added just one run in the bottom of the 10th off an RBI from Devon Walter. Free led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders added one each. Brown had a team-high two runs while Free had a team-high two RBI. CeCe Darilek took the loss, pitching seven innings with five hits and three runs allowed. Haley Parker and Karen Tennis pitching in relief, combining for three innings with seven hits and four runs allowed. Taylor Surrento earned the win for the Blazers, pitching a complete 10 innings with six hits and five runs allowed. UMHB totaled five runs on six hits with three errors while the Blazers had seven runs on 12 hits with one error.
 
UMHB will advance to the 2017 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed. No. 1 seed University of Texas at Tyler will host the tournament, which runs Thursday, April 27th – Saturday, April 29th. The Cru will open play against No. 5 seed Louisiana College on Thursday, April 27th at 1 p.m.
