Softball completes sweep of Sul Ross State with 7-5 win

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team completed a clean sweep of Sul Ross State University with a 7-5 win Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 22-12 on the season and 17-10 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 13-21 overall and 8-16 in league play.

Leah Brown gave UMHB a lead in the bottom of the third inning, hitting an RBI single to score Makenzi Dawson from second base for a 1-0 advantage. Kasi Cummings added another run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring off an RBI single from Cori Drake for a two-run lead. Sul Ross State added two runs in the top of the fifth to even the game at two runs each before Devon Walter and Leah Brown hit back-to-back home runs to put the Cru up 4-2. The Lobos responded with a three-run inning in the sixth to lead UMHB 5-4. Brown connected for another home run in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs for a 7-5 Cru win. Brown led the Cru with three hits and five RBI, breaking UMHB career records in home runs and runs scored. CeCe Darilek earned the win in the circle for the Cru, pitching 2.2 innings with three hits and three runs allowed. Parker earned the start, allowing four hits and two runs in 4.1 innings of work. Marissa Garcia took the loss for the Lobos, pitching two innings with four hits and three runs allowed. Jackie Gonzales opened the game in the circle for Sul Ross State, allowing seven hits and four runs in four innings of work. UMHB totaled seven runs on 11 hits with three errors while the Lobos had five runs on seven hits with one error.

The Cru returns to action Thursday, April 13th in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. That series will conclude with a 12 p.m. single game on Friday, April 14th.
