Men’s Soccer routs Sul Ross State 7-1

ALPINE, Texas   – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team routed Sul Ross State University 7-1 Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The win improved the Cru to 12-3-1 on the season and 8-2-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in league action.
 
Steven Dang opened scoring in the sixth minute, lobbing a shot under the goalkeeper off an assist from Jack Coad. Seth Neveloff advanced that lead in the 19th minute scoring an unassisted goal. Sul Ross State cut that lead to one in the 44th minute, converting a penalty kick for their lone goal of the game. UMHB's offense took over in the second half, scoring five unanswered goals. Neveloff and Dang scored their second goals of the contest in the 47th and 49th minutes. Rolando Nieto hit a shot into the upper 90 for UMHB in the 51st minute to extend the Cru lead to 5-1. UMHB held that until Marcelo Gaitan converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute for a 6-1 advantage. Renato Ortiz was the final Crusader to score, scoring off a pass from Corey Smith for the 7-1 win.
 
Jacob Cabezas led the Cru with three shots while four other Crusaders added two. UMHB totaled 21 shots, putting 14 on frame. Dang and Neveloff led the Cru with two goals each while Jack Coad was the assist leader with two. Nieto, Smith and Patrick Roach also recorded assists for UMHB. Travis Aday and Isai Olvera split time in the net for UMHB. Aday played the first 45 minutes with one goal allowed while Olvera made a save in his 45 minutes. Javier Ramos and Cesar Sanchez split time in the net for the Lobos. Ramos played 56 minutes with five goals allowed. UMHB limited the Lobos to just two shots on frame in the match.
 
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, October 30th, hosting a quarterfinal match in the 2018 American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. The UMHB men will kick off at 8 p.m. at the UMHB Soccer Fields in Belton.
