BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team edged Howard Payne University 2-1 in overtime thanks to an offensive explosion from freshman
Jacob Cabezas.
Howard Payne took a lead in the 11
th minute when Michael Westerman scored off an assist from Ricardo Pierce. The Yellow Jackets held that lead until the 68
th minute when Cabezas scored off an assist from
Mathew Lay to even the contest. From there, regulation played scoreless forcing an overtime period. Cabezas netted the game-winner in the 94
th minute to give UMHB the 2-1 win.
Cabezas led the Cru with three shots while
Patrick Roach,
Nick Villanueva and
Steven Dang each added two. UMHB totaled 15 shots, putting eight on goal.
Travis Aday earned the win in the net for UMHB, making four saves and allowing one goal. Andrew Hackney took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, allowing two goals and making six saves.
UMHB improved to 9-3-0 on the season and 5-2 in American Southwest Conference action with the win. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in league play. UMHB returns to action on Saturday, October 13
th in a 7:30 p.m. match against Concordia University Texas at the UMHB Soccer Fields in Belton.
