BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team shot 63 percent from the field in the opening half and kept rolling in the second as the Cru topped Southwestern University 107-80 Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 4-0 with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 3-2 on the year.
The Cru scored the game's first six points and opened the game with an 18-8 run. Southwestern pulled back to within seven, but UMHB extended the lead from there and held a 65-38 edge at halftime. The Cru carried that momentum into the second half and led by as many as 41 points before coasting to the victory.
Sam Moore was 4-6 from three-point range and 8-11 overall to score a game-high 22 points for UMHB. He also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Byrale Carter had 16 points and six assists,
Brian Long scored 14 points,
LaKendric Hyson chipped in 13 and
Demarius Cress also reached double figures with 11 for the Cru. In addition to shooting 63 percent in the opening half, UMHB hit 62 percent from three-point range. The Cru shot 59 percent from the field for the game and hit 11-22 from beyond the arc. UMHB also out rebounded Southwestern 43-32 in the victory.
Joel Martinez led the Pirates with 17 points on 5-7 shooting. Brandon Alexander added 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Luke Hicks chipped in 11 points. Southwestern shot 39 percent from the field and went 13-33 from long range in the loss.
UMHB will continue its home stand with a 6:30 pm tip-off against Schreiner University on Monday. The Cru will then open American Southwest Conference play with home games against East Texas Baptist on Thursday and LeTourneau University on Saturday.
