MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team made history Friday afternoon as the Cru beat Birmingham-Southern College 3-1 to earn the program's first victory in the NCAA tournament.
UMHB used a 7-3 lead to pull away in the first set and held on for a 25-20 opening-set victory. UMHB trailed early in the second but outscored BSC 5-2 in the final points to take a 25-22 set win. BSC took the third set 25-19, but UMHB opened the fourth with a 10-2 lead and did not trail in the set, taking a 25-22 win to seal the 3-1 match victory.
Corinne Novak led the Cru with 15 kills while
Jenna Gillean had 13,
Sarah Paolini had eight and
Hope Hoelscher added six.
Miranda Klein anchored UMHB's offense with 40 assists as the Cru hit .138 in the match. Defensively,
Haleigh Evans led the Cru with 26 digs followed by Gillean with 19. Paolini and Hoelscher led defensive efforts at the net, going up for four blocks each as UMHB totaled seven in the match. UMHB totaled 44 kills, 77 digs and three service aces, limiting BSC to a .126 hitting percentage in the match with 55 kills, 83 digs and 12 team blocks.
UMHB advances to the Second Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament and will face tournament host Berry College in a 5 p.m. (E.T.) match on Saturday, November 10
th at Berry College. Birmingham-Southern College ends their season at 25-7.
