Volleyball sweeps opening day of 2018

RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept its opening day of competition with a pair of 3-0 wins over Heidelberg University and University of Wisconsin-Superior.
 
UMHB opened with a three-set 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 sweep over Heidelberg. UMHB jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first set, then used an 8-4 run to grab a substantial lead on Heidelberg. UMHB finished that set with an 11-point victory. The Cru used a 6-1 lead in the second set to jump ahead and secure a 25-20 win. Heidelberg fought hard in the third set, taking its only lead of the match at 20-19. Jenna Gillean, Sarah Paolini and Corinne Novak combined for the final five points to secure the sweep. Novak led the Cru with 15 kills followed by Gillean with 13. Cory Jo Martin recorded a team-high 25 assists followed by Klein with 14. Defensively, Klein led with 13 digs followed by Evans with 12. UMHB totaled 44 kills with 16 kills on 106 attacks while Heidelberg had 25 kills with 15 errors.


The Cru followed that with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-13 win over Wisconsin-Superior. The first set tied seven times before UMHB finished with an 8-4 run to secure the 25-21 win. The Yellowjackets evened the Cru in the second set with 11 ties before Paolini and Gillean secured the 26-24 win. UMHB took charge in the third, opening with a 6-1 run and did not trail in the set. Novak led the Cru with 11 kills followed by Klein with nine. Martin powered UMHB's offense with 19 assists while Klein added 16. Evans was the defensive leader with 13 digs. UMHB totaled 43 kills on 100 attacks with 13 errors while the Yellowjackets had 32 kills on 105 attacks with 18 errors.
 
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, September 4th in a 6 p.m. exhibition against Hill College. The Cru then travels to Thousand Oaks, California for the Cal Lutheran Tournament September 7th-8th.
