AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team traveled to Concordia University Texas on Friday evening, handing the Tornados a 3-0 loss.
UMHB used three 3-0 runs in the first set to take a lead on the Tornados, leading by as many as five points in the set. The Cru took the first set 25-20 but fell behind quickly in the second. Concordia Texas took an 8-3 lead in the second set and held advantage before
Corinne Novak served back-to-back service aces, opening a 6-0 run for the Cru. UMHB did not trail again, taking another 25-20 win in the second. The third set went back-and-forth before the Tornados took a lead with a 5-1 run. UMHB chipped away at the lead, tying the match at 17, 18 and 19 before scoring the final six points to win the set 25-19.
Novak and
Kayla Janikula led the Cru with 11 kills each while
Jenna Gillean added nine.
Cory Jo Martin assisted 30 of UMHB's 45 kills as the Cru hit .300 in the match.
Adrien Valdez was the defensive leader with 18 digs while Gillean added 14 and Novak had 13.
Sarah Paolini led defensive efforts at the net with five blocks while
Miranda Klein added four. UMHB limited the Tornados to 40 kills on 175 attacks for a .175 performance.
UMHB improved to 13-4 on the season and remains undefeated in American Southwest Conference play at 9-0. The Cru returns to action on Tuesday, October 8
th in a 6 p.m. match against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
