BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Howard Payne University 3-0 Tuesday evening in Belton.
UMHB jumped to an early lead, scoring the first five points of the match. The Cru held a lead through the first set, using another 5-0 run to gain distance on the Yellow Jackets and closing with four consecutive points. Howard Payne took a 3-1 lead in the second but UMHB evened the set and used a 6-0 run midway through to take another lead. UMHB did not trail again, taking a 25-21 win in the set.
Miranda Klein served 11 points in the third set as UMHB cruised to a 25-8 victory, winning the match 3-0.
Sarah Paolini and
Jenna Gillean led the Cru with 10 kills each while
Lauren Williams added eight and Klein added seven. UMHB hit 45 kills on 111 attacks, powered by
Cory Jo Martin with 34 assists. Defensively, Gillean totaled 15 digs followed by Klein with 13 and Martin with 11. UMHB also put up five team blocks, limiting the Yellow Jackets to a .061 percentage in the match.
UMHB improved to 14-4 on the season and 10-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The Cru returns to action this weekend in the Trinity Tournament in San Antonio. UMHB opens play on Friday, October 11
th in a 1 p.m. match against No. 11 Ohio Northern University.
