GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team fought back from a halftime deficit to grab the lead, but the Cru could not overcome a 15-point second half run in a 60-52 loss to Guilford College Friday night in North Carolina. UMHB drops to 1-1 on the season with the loss. The 19
th-ranked Quakers improve to 2-1 on the year with the victory.
The Cru trailed 23-20 at halftime after falling behind 14-4 in the opening minutes of the contest. UMHB rallied early in the second half to take its first lead of the game at 26-25 on three
Sam Moore free throws 1:39 into the period. The Quakers responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 points for a seven-point lead. The Cru followed with an 18-5 spurt and
Devyn Brewton's three-point play gave UMHB its biggest lead of the game at 46-40. Guilford then erupted for a 15-0 run to build a nine-point advantage. Moore converted a three-point play to snap the streak, but the Cru would not get closer than 55-52 the rest of the way as the Quakers put the game away.
Moore led the Cru with 18 points on the night and he scored 16 of those in the second half. Brewton and
Byrale Carter added seven points apiece. Brewton added a team-high seven rebounds and Carter recorded a team-best four assists. UMHB shot just 31 percent from the field and went 3-24 from three-point range.
Kyler Gregory led Guilford with 19 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and he also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Tyler Dearman added 13 points. The Quakers hit 39 percent from the floor and shot 37 free-throws compared to just 18 for the Cru. Guilford also out rebounded UMHB 45-36 on the night.
The Cru will continue its road trip with a 5 PM Eastern Time game against North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday in Greensboro. UMHB will take on Averett University on Sunday afternoon to close out the road trip.
