BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team was edged 75-72 by Wayland Baptist in the Cru's 2019-2020 season opener Saturday evening in Belton.
UMHB lead early in the first quarter with a three-point advantage at the halfway point. Wayland Baptist tied the contest at the 4:04 mark and took a one-point advantage with 1:49 left in the first.
Brooke Elliott hit a shot to put the Cru up 19-18 after the first 10 minutes of action and
Kasey Jo Hinton opened the second quarter with a field goal to put UMHB up by three. The second quarter saw five lead changes before UMHB closed the first half with a 17-4 run to take a 43-30 lead. The Cru extended that lead in the third quarter, leading by as many as 21. The Queens chipped away late, trailing by 13 points at the end of the third quarter and cutting UMHB's lead to just three points at the 5:05 mark in the fourth. Wayland Baptist continued to fight back, taking a one-point lead with 18 seconds left. Kelea Pool sealed the win for the Queens with a pair of free throws with 0.07 seconds left on the clock.
Hannah Holt led the Cru with 28 points followed by
Kendall Rollins with 21. Rollins also had 10 rebounds in the contest, opening her senior campaign with a double-double. UMHB brought down 35 boards and forced the Queens into 12 turnovers. The Cru shot 41.7 percent in the contest and 36.0 percent from beyond the arc, but fell in penalty shots with just a 42.9 performance.
Morgan Bennet led the Queens with 16 points followed by Kaylee Edgemon and Kelea Pool with 15 points each. The Queens shot 46.2 percent from the field, 26.3 percent in three-points and hit 10 of 12 free throws.
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, November 19
th in a 6 p.m. in an American Southwest Conference opening-match against Concordia University Texas at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
