BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never really let Texas Wesleyan get back into the game as the Cru topped the Rams 76-67 Thursday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 6-1 on the year with its sixth consecutive victory. The loss drops TWU to 5-2 on the year.
UMHB built a 12-4 lead early in the opening quarter. The Rams chipped away to get back to within 16-14 at the end the period. The Cru stretched the lead into double figures early in the second period and led by as many as 13 before settling for a 36-25 lead at the break. The lead would grow to as many as 14 points in the third quarter and the Rams never got closer than six points in the final period as UMHB held on for the victory.
Kendall Rollins led the Cru with 23 points and she also grabbed seven rebounds.
Hannah Holt had 14 points,
Allaira Jones scored 12 and
Alicia Blackwell added 11 for UMHB. The Cru shot 58 percent in the fourth quarter and finished at 46 percent for the game. UMHB also out rebounded the Rams 43-34 on the night.
Alexus Brigham led Texas Wesleyan with 14 points off the bench. Nicole Gleason had 13 points and Jordan Brightwell grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. TWU was 17-32 from the field in the second half but only shot 42 percent for the game.
The Cru will now hit the road to play a non-conference game at Rhodes College on Sunday. UMHB will take on the Lynx in a 1 pm start in the final game before the start of the Christmas break.
