RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team could not overcome hot shooting from Hardin-Simmons as the Cru fell to the Cowboys 97-91 in the Semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Richardson. The loss ends UMHB's season at 21-6 on the year. HSU improves to 17-10 and advances to the ASC title game tomorrow to face the Concordia Texas/U.T.-Dallas winner.

The Cru's only lead of the first half came at 3-2 as the Cowboys shot 53 percent from the field in the first half to open up a 44-39 halftime lead. UMHB fought back in the second half and took a 54-50 lead 4:20 into the period. Hardin-Simmons went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead. Shaqur Martin tied it up with a three-pointer and the two teams would be tied two more times before HSU finally gained some separation. The closest UMHB would get the rest of the way was 79-77 with 3:13 remaining in the game and the Cowboys iced the game with a huge free-throw advantage from there.

LaKendric Hyson led the Cru with 20 points and Sam Moore added 17. Demarius Cress scored 16 points, Byrale Carter had 15 and Brian Long scored 10 for UMHB. The Cru shot 53 percent from the field in the second half but finished at 46 percent for the game.   Three UMHB players fouled out in the game and the Cowboys shot 40 free throws compared to just 25 for the Cru.

Jalen Terry led HSU with 32 points off the bench on 11-17 shooting. Neal Chambliss had 18, Joe Hoeup scored 17 and Steven Quinn chipped in 11 for the Cowboys. Hardin-Simmons shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and hit 55 percent for the game as a team. The Cowboys hit 27-40 from the free-throw line on the way to the win and turned the ball over just ten times.

The Cru was making its conference record 19th appearance in the ASC Tournament. The loss closes out the UMHB careers of seniors Demarius Cress, Mike Davis, LaKendric Hyson, Brian Long and Shaqur Martin.
