Softball edged by LeTourneau in extra innings

LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fought off a four-run deficit to tie LeTourneau University at the end of regulation, but fell to the YellowJackets 8-6 in extra innings Saturday afternoon in Longview. The loss dropped the Cru to 5-8 overall and 5-4 in American Southwest Conference action, while the YellowJackets improved to 9-4 overall and 7-2 in league play.
 
Alexis Galvan opened the game with a 1-0 lead for UMHB, scoring off an RBI single from Emily Bounds. LeTourneau responded, taking the lead with an explosive five-run performance in the bottom of that frame. Hana Bonner gave the YellowJackets a lead with a three-RBI homerun before Katelyn Trombley and Ashley Crawford scored on back-to-back RBI singles. UMHB cut the lead to three runs in the top of the next frame when Kasi Cummings scored on a wild pitch. Cummings struck again in the top of the fifth, hitting a two-RBI double to score Taygan Landrey and Jessica Picou. Hannah Wolfe also scored in the inning off an RBI from Milly Cesare, tying the contest at five after four and a half frames. UMHB tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth to take its second lead of the game before LeTourneau responded again, scoring Silver Montgomery off an RBI single from Haydn Parker. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, sending the contest to extra innings. Macey Mize sealed the LeTourneau win in the bottom of the eighth, slamming a two-RBI homerun for an 8-6 victory. Bounds and Kasi Cummings led the Cru with two RBI each while Bounds had a team-high two hits. Galvan, Landrey, Wolfe, Kasi Cummings and Jacqueline Kay all scored runs for UMHB. CeCe Darilek took the loss for the Cru, throwing seven innings with nine hits and three runs allowed. Darilek struck out six of her 32 batters faced. Samantha Akers earned the win for LeTourneau, pitching 3.2 innings with two hits and one run allowed. UMHB totaled six runs on nine hits with one error while LeTourneau had eight runs on 12 hits with three errors.
 
UMHB returns to action March 8th-9th in a three-game series against Hardin-Simmons University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
