BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed a much-needed win in the opening game but could not generate enough offense to overcome a slow start in the second as the Cru split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State Thursday in Belton. UMHB took game one 9-8 with Sul Ross taking game two 9-1.
The Cru took advantage of five Lobo errors in a 9-8 walk-off win in game one. Sul Ross jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings before UMHB answered with a four-run third. The first run scored on an error,
Mitch Patterson had a sacrifice fly and
Jacob Dellipoali added a two-run double. Sul Ross retook the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Jack Herbert's RBI single cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the frame but the Lobos added a run in the top of the fifth. The Cru tied it at 7-7 on
Jackson Godoy's sacrifice fly and
Caimyn Holiday's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly gave the Lobos an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh and set up UMHB's comeback in the bottom of the inning. Dellipoali drew a lead-off walk,
Jason Samuel dropped down a bunt and reached safely when he jarred the ball loose on an attempted tag and the Cru won when
Hunter McQuary's but attempt was thrown into right field, allowing both runners to score.
Andrew Hutchings earned the win in relief of
Cameron Whitman to even his record at 1-1. Dellipoali had two of the Cru's seven hits. Peyton Merett took the loss for Sul Ross. Chris York had three hits for the Lobos.
UMHB could not overcome an early deficit in the 9-1 game two loss. The Lobos used two hits, a hit batter, an error, a passed ball and two wild pitches to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
Landon Dieterich doubled home a run to cut it to 4-1 in the bottom of the frame. Sul Ross added a run in the third, two in the sixth and two more in the ninth to put the game away. Dieterich's hit was the only one of the game for the Cru.
Ross Baer took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season. Aaron Marquez picked up the win for Sul Ross to move to 3-1 as he combined with two other pitchers to strike out 13 batters in the combined one-hitter. Wesley Moss and Jett Hartley had two hits apiece as the Lobos finished with nine base hits in the contest.
UMHB is now 5-17 overall and 1-7 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. Sul Ross is 10-10 overall and 6-2 in ASC play on the year. The two teams will close out the series with a 2 pm single game on Friday. UMHB will then hit the road for a four-game road swing next week.
