ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used two solid pitching performances and a game two offensive explosion to roll to a doubleheader sweep of McMurry University Saturday in Abilene.
Andrew Hutchings tossed a near no-hitter in a 6-0 game one victory and
Daylon Nebgen hit for the cycle to highlight the Cru's 20-4 win in game two. UMHB has now won a season-best four straight games.
Andrew Hutchings took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Cru generated more than enough offense to make it stand up in a 6-0 game one victory.
Mitch Patterson's RBI fielder's choice gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Jacob Dellipoali's RBI single stretched it to 2-0 in the top of the third. UMHB had a chance to add to the lead in the top of the fourth, but an inning-ending double-play thwarted the drive.
Caimyn Holiday singled home another run for the Cru in the top of the fifth, but UMHB left the bases loaded.
Hunter McQuary added to the UMHB lead with a two-run single in the top of the sixth.
Landon Dieterich made it a 6-0 game with an RBI double in the top of the seventh. Hutchings only allowed one base runner going into the seventh inning and retired the lead-off hitter. Sam Hillyer singled down the left field line to break up the no-hit bid and Justin Kurtz followed with a single. Hutchings worked out of it and settled for a two-hit shutout. Hutchings struck out two and did not walk a batter in raising his record to 2-1. All nine UMHB starters had hits in the victory. J.T. Barnes took the loss for McMurry to drop to 2-3 on the season.
The Cru's offense exploded on the way to a 20-4 win in game two.
Daylon Nebgen tripled home the first run and then came home to score on
Garrett Gonzales' RBI single to make it 2-0 in the top of the second. Gonzales singled home a run in the top of the fourth to push the UMHB lead to 3-0. The Cru broke it open in the top of the sixth. Nebgen blasted a two-run homer, his first collegiate home run, to give the Cru a 5-0 lead.
Jackson Godoy added an RBI single, Patterson singled home two more, Herbert doubled home two runs and Dellipoali added an RBI double to make it an 11-0 game. The War Hawks scored three in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 11-3. The Cru took the lead back into double figures on RBI doubles from Gonzales and Dieterich in the top of the seventh. Holiday scored on a wild pitch and Patterson singled home another run, Dellipoali drew a bases loaded walk and Nebgen doubled home two runs to complete the cycle as UMHB opened up an 18-3 advantage. Two more runs scored on a War Hawks error to make it 20-3. McMurry added a run in the bottom of the seventh before the game ended on the run rule. Nebgen hit for the cycle, drove in five runs and scored three to lead the UMHB offense. Herbert and Gonzales also had four hits and Dieterich added three more as the Cru finished with 20 hits as a team.
Aaron Edelmon earned the win for UMHB to move to 2-5 on the season. He scattered ten hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out four in a complete-game performance.
The Cru improves to 9-18 overall and 4-8 in American Southwest Conference play with the two victories. McMurry falls to 7-20 overall and 0-12 in ASC play with the two losses. UMHB will now return home to host Hardin-Simmons for a three-game ASC series next weekend.
