Softball drops doubleheader to Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a doubleheader to Southwestern University, falling 6-2 and 5-3 to the Pirates Tuesday evening in Georgetown. Southwestern improved to 26-4 on the season while UMHB fell to 17-14.
 
UMHB took an early lead in the first game when Milly Cesare doubled to score Avery Kelly in the second inning. Southwestern evened the contest in the next frame before Kelly hit a solo home run in the fourth, giving UMHB a 2-1 advantage. Celeste Silvas responded once again for Southwestern, hitting a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Pirates a one-run lead. Southwestern added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a sixth-inning home run from Katie Bricarell for the 6-2 win. Kourtney Cummings led the Cru with two hits in the contest while Kelly scored both of UMHB's runs. Kat Reed and Camryn Rucker split time in the circle for UMHB. Reed threw 3.2 innings with 12 hits and three runs allowed while Rucker threw 2.1 innings in relief, surrendering four hits and three runs. Lindsey Longuet and Lexi Shafer split pitching duties for the Pirates. Longuet threw four innings with two runs allowed while Shafer followed that with three shutout innings. UMHB totaled two runs on six hits with no errors while Southwestern had six runs on 16 hits with one error.
 
Cesare batted in another early lead for the Cru in the second contest, scoring Alexis Galvan with an RBI single in the second inning. Andrea Hern and Kylie Nixon both recorded RBI in the bottom of that frame to give Southwestern a 2-1 lead. The Pirates scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth off a two-RBI single from Nixon. Kourtney Cummings responded for UMHB in the top of the fifth inning, slamming an RBI triple to score Kasi Cummings. Kourtney Cummings went on to score off an RBI single from Alexis Galvan to cut the Pirates' lead to just one. Southwestern added an insurance run in the bottom of that inning, then held the Cru scoreless through the final two innings to secure the 5-3 win. Bayleigh Grogan pitched 4.1 innings for UMHB, allowing 11 hits with five runs and three strikeouts. Three pitchers combined for Southwestern with Bailey Meyer leading the way. Meyer threw 4.1 innings with nine hits and three runs allowed. UMHB totaled three runs on 12 hits while the Pirates had five runs on 13 hits with two errors.
 
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, April 11th in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Sul Ross State University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
