GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team fought back from a second half deficit, but could not find the net with the game-winner in a 1-1 tie against Southwestern University in the season opener Friday night in Georgetown. Both teams are now 0-0-1 to start the season.
The match was scoreless through the first half as both teams were unable to convert scoring chances. UMHB's
Diego Valadez drove a shot off the crossbar midway through the half on the Cru's best possibility. The Pirates finally found the back of the net as Jack Adams scored off an assist from Wil Mekelburg in the 60
th minute to make it 1-0 Southwestern.
Marston Fisher tied the game when he headed home a corner kick from
Marcelo Gaitan in the 82
nd minute for the Cru.
Nick Villanueva had a chance to win it in the final minute of regulation for UMHB, but his shot sailed high sending the match to overtime. Neither team seriously threatened through the first ten minute session.
Isai Olvera came up with a big save off a Pirate header in the 101
st minute to keep the match at 1-1, but Southwestern's Sam Laude answered with a save at the other end. The Pirates had one last chance in the final minute but missed wide.
Olvera finished with five saves in goal for the Cru as Southwestern outshot UMHB 15-11 in the match.
Price Peden had three of those shots for the Cru. The match was a physical contest as the two teams combined for 21 fouls and six yellow cards on the night. Laude had two saves in net for the Pirates.
The UMHB men return to action with another non-conference road game on Saturday night. The Cru travels to Seguin to take on Texas Lutheran in another 8 pm start.
