BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning as the Cru rolled to an 11-2 victory over Schreiner University in the 2020 season opener Friday night in Belton. UMHB is now 1-0 after giving Head Coach
Mike Stawski a win in his Cru debut. The Mountaineers fall to 1-2-2 on the year with the loss.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first half of the contest. Schreiner scratched out single runs in the second and sixth innings to grab a 2-0 lead. The Cru shaved the lead in half when
Hunter McQuary singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, moved to third on
Malek Bolin's double and scored on
Luke Nagy's RBI groundout. UMHB then broke it open in the bottom of the seventh.
Caimyn Holiday singled with two outs and the Cru followed with back-to-back walks. Bolin then blasted the first offering from Schreiner reliever Jack Hakala over the wall in left-centerfield for a grand slam to make it 5-2 UMHB. After a walk and another single,
Sal Camilleri crushed a three-run homer for his first collegiate hit to stretch the lead to 8-2. The Cru tacked on Bolin's sacrifice fly and two run-scoring groundouts in the bottom of the eighth to make it 11-2.
Alex Palczewski earned the win for UMHB with three and two-thirds innings of three-hit relief. Bolin had two hits and five RBI for the Cru and Holiday also had two hits. Devin Hooper took the loss for Schreiner after giving up four runs in four and two-thirds innings. Josh Gilliam had three of the Mountaineers nine hits in the game and Reece Hohertz added two more.
The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Red Murff Field. UMHB is scheduled to continue its season-opening home stand with a 6 pm start against Southwestern next Tuesday.
