BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a dominant pitching performance to win game one, but Schreiner's bats came alive in game two as the two teams split a doubleheader Saturday in Belton. The Cru took game one 2-0 with the Mountaineers winning game two 12-3. UMHB is now 2-1 to start the season. Schreiner is now 2-3-1 on the year.
Rahul Champaneri was dominant on the mound and UMHB manufactured a couple of runs in a 2-0 game one victory. The Cru put together three straight singles to lead off the bottom of the fourth and
Jack Herbert scored on a balk to give UMHB a 1-0 lead.
Sal Camilleri scored on a double play in the bottom of the fifth to stretch it to 2-0. Champaneri struck out eight, walked one and only allowed Reece Hohertz's bloop single in the top of the second inning while tossing a shutout in his collegiate debut.
Malek Bolin had two of UMHB's six hits in the game. Garrett Whitley scattered six hits in taking the loss for Schreiner.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first six innings of the second game.
Jeb Zolman's solo homer cut the lead to 8-1 in the bottom of that frame and UMHB scored two more in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 8-3 game. Schreiner added some insurance on Josh Gilliam's grand slam in the top of the ninth. Zolman and
Caimyn Holiday had two hits apiece for the Cru.
Bailey Whatley took the loss on the mound for UMHB. Gilliam had four hits and six RBI for Schreiner and Jeffrey Williams had four hits and four RBI. Andrew Castaneda earned the win with six innings of five-hit pitching for the Mountaineers.
The Cru will return to action with a non-conference home game against Southwestern University on Tuesday. UMHB will then open American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series at Louisiana College next weekend.
