PINEVILLE, Louisiana – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome Louisiana College's five-run eighth inning as the Cru fell to the Wildcats 8-2 in the finale of a three-game series Sunday in Pineville. The loss drops UMHB to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference play. LC improves to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the ASC with the victory.
The game was scoreless into the top of the fifth inning before
Hunter Jones doubled home
Landon Dieterich to give the Cru a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats tied the game on a run-scoring error in the bottom of that inning and took a 2-1 lead on Hunter David's solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. LC added another run in the bottom of the seventh before putting five on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Tyrese Morgan had a two-run single and Jacob Fowler doubled home a pair of runs in that inning. Dieterich singled home
Jacob Dellipoali in the top of the ninth to cut it to 8-2, but that was as close as UMHB would get.
Garrett Gonzales had three of the Cru's eight hits on the day.
Bailey Whatley took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Fowler had three hits and three RBI to lead the Wildcats offense. Colton Newsom earned the win with two innings of three-hit relief for LC.
UMHB will now return home to host Belhaven University for a three-game conference series next weekend. The Cru and Blazers will open that series with a 2 pm doubleheader on Friday at Red Murff Field.
