Baseball drops doubleheader to Belhaven

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Belhaven University Friday in Belton. The Cru fell 8-5 and 7-0 to fall to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Blazers improve to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the ASC with the sweep.

UMHB gave up three runs in the top of the eighth inning to fall 8-5 in game one of the doubleheader. The Blazers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before UMHB answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Hunter Jones and Hunter McQuary singled home the two runs. Logan Walters hit a solo home run just inside of the left field foul pole to make it 4-2 Belhaven in the top of the third. Jack Herbert tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. After the Blazers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth, Malek Bolin tied it up with an RBI double in the bottom half. It would stay that way into extra innings before the Blazers broke it open. Caleb Whittle doubled down the right field line to drive in two runs and Belhaven added an insurance run on Hunter White's RBI infield single. Landon Murray took the loss for the Cru to drop to 1-1. Jones had two of UMHB's seven hits. Justin Milam earned the win in relief and White had four hits for the Blazers.

Belhaven broke open a tight game with five runs in the top of the seventh to take game two 7-0. Justin Milam blasted a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Blazers up and break up a scoreless game. The two runs also snapped a streak of 21 consecutive innings for Cru freshman Rahul Champaneri. Milam added a grand slam to highlight the five-run seventh and UMHB could not come back in the bottom of the inning. Champaneri took the loss to drop to 2-1. Taylor Neil had two of the Cru's four hits. Brett Sanchez pitched a complete-game shutout to even his record at 2-2 for Belhaven. Milam had three hits and drove in six runs for the Blazers.

The two teams will close out the series with a noon single game on Saturday at Red Murff Field. UMHB will play a three-game ASC series at LeTourneau University next weekend in Longview.
