BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fought control problems in the opening inning and the Cru struggled to come back in a 15-5 loss to Belhaven University Saturday in Belton. UMHB falls to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The Blazers improve to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the ASC after completing the series sweep.

The first three Belhaven hitters drew walks and UMHB hit the fourth batter to drive in the first run. Two bases loaded walks stretched it to 3-0 and the Blazers added another run on an error and Hunter White singled home two runs to make it 6-0 after the top of the first. Malek Bolin hit a solo home run for the Cru in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 6-1 but Belhaven tacked on four more in the top of the sixth for a 10-1 lead. Bolin had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, Luke Coale had a sacrifice fly and Brandon Madden singled home a run to cut the gap to 10-4. The Blazers hit three consecutive solo homers in the top of the eighth as part of a five-run inning to open up a 15-4 advantage. Daylon Nebgen added a solo home run for UMHB in the bottom of the inning, but the game would end on the run rule.

Bolin and Caimyn Holiday had two hits apiece for the Cru. Alex Palczewski took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. Four different players had two hits apiece for Belhaven and White drove in three runs. Harris Coleman scattered five hits over five and a third innings to even his record at 1-1 for the Blazers.

The Cru will return to action with a three-game ASC series at LeTourneau University next weekend in Longview. The two teams will open with a 6 pm single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
