ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over McMurry University Friday evening in Abilene. The win improved the Cru to 16-0 on the season and 11-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the War Hawks fell to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in league play.
UMHB used a 7-0 run to pull away halfway through the first set, taking an 18-11 lead and cruising to a 25-18 first-set win. McMurry took a lead late in the second set but UMHB rallied to tie the set at 23-23. UMHB fought off three set points before
Kayla Janikula tied the set with a kill and
Kylie Metcalf hit back-to-back slams to give UMHB the 29-27 win. UMHB pulled away in the third set with a 5-1 run and took a 25-21 win to earn the 3-0 sweep.
"We survived tonight," Head Coach
Mark Pryor said. "It was pretty rough. At times it looked sloppy.
Ella Brunson came in and did a great job setting the middles and the rights."
Metcalf led the Cru with 13 kills while
Sarah Grace Merry and
Hannah Frasca each added nine. UMHB totaled 46 kills on 153 attacks with 32 assists from
Ella Brunson. Defensively, Frasca led with 19 digs followed by
Alyssa Christiansen with 16. UMHB limited the War Hawks to a .104 percentage in the match with just 37 kills.
The Cru returns to action on Saturday, October 9
th in a 12 p.m. match at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
"Tomorrow is going to be a very tough match for us," Pryor added. "Maybe one of our toughest this season so far."
