BELTON, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team edged Rhodes College 73-72 in the 2021-22 season opener Saturday night in Belton.
UMHB used a six-point run to gain advantage on the Lynx, leading by as many as nine points and ending the first quarter with a 21-15 advantage. The Cru continued that trend in the second quarter, leading by 15 halfway through and cruising to a 43-30 halftime lead.
Cheyanne Bonilla led the Cru with nine points in the half, followed by
Arieona Rosborough with eight. UMHB shot 48.6 percent in the half, going 18-of-37 from the field. UMHB's defense forced ten turnovers in the half with eight total steals.
Rhodes fought back in the second half, chipping away at UMHB's lead. The Lynx cut the Cru's lead to just eight points in the third quarter before coming all the way back in the fourth, taking a one-point lead with 1:21 left in the contest. Rhodes held that lead until 13 seconds left when
Ashley Faux scored off a turnover to put the Cru back up by one.
Alexia Martin stole the ball on the Lynx' next possession before
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen sealed the win with a blocked shot in the final second.
McLeod led the Cru with 13 points followed by Rosborough with 10. Defensively,
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen was UMHB's leader with 12 rebounds while
Olivia Champion recorded three steals.
UMHB returns to action on Sunday, November 7
th in a 4 p.m. contest against Trinity University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
